Dude, where’s my……..

Growing up, I always wished we lived in a house that had a cool attic. (What? Don’t all kids do that?) You know, I wanted an attic like the one from “Flower’s in the Attic”, well minus the selfish Mom and loco Grandmom. But you get the point. The type of attic that had enough space to run around in and play hide and seek. Well that never happened, but I kept daydreaming about it. For real.

Anyways, when we were house hunting I always checked out the attic to see if I’d ever find my dream attic (ok, dream attic is a bit much, but you know what I mean). All this rambling to say that as a kid, a huge attic = a fun place to hang out and play, but today as an adult a huge attic = major storage space. Yay!

Our attic is pretty large but unfortunately it’s not all useable space. But there’s enough space for lots and LOTS of storage. So if you were to take a look in our attic now it would consist of  50% Christmas items, 10%home decor, 40% baby items. Which means if and when things are purged, it’s the baby items that get the boot.

In our area there’s usually a few children’s consignment sales a couple times a year that I’ve checked out in the past. So this year I decided to participate to help get rid of unnecessary clutter. And it was fairly easy to do. I registered online and entered and priced my items for sale into their computer system. Afterwards I printed bar codes and attached them to my items. The hardest part of the process would have to have been the actual sorting. And here’s a few pictures of why.

However we still got it done. And afterwards I picked up anything that didn’t sale because we were having a neighborhood wide yard sale. So it gave me a second chance to sell anything that hadn’t previously sold. Here’s how we did.

Consignment Sale                                       Yard Sale

$130 approx                                                   $120 approx

- $ 30% consign                                            -$3 portion of ad cost

-$ 10 registration fee               -$17 kids (eating away our profits!) :)

$80 profit                                                                  $100 profit

Pretty good right?! Almost $200 for stuff we’d never use again that’s just sitting in the attic! And since this was our 2nd yard sale I feel like a pro, so if you decide to have one here’s a few tips.

Yard Sale TIPS

  • only sale what you would buy
  • if items are not in saleable condition use them elsewhere, like for cleaning rags or recycle
  • price things accordingly. your goal is to get rid of things, not get rich
  • be realistic and flexible
  • whatever doesn’t sell, no big deal, just donate it

At the end of the day not everything sold, but we got rid of a ton of stuff, got a pocket full of cash and had a good time doing it. ……..Until we fast forward to yesterday when the Little One asks me (for the 2nd time since the yard sale) Where’s my giraffe shirt?

Outdoor plans

Spring is in the air. And doesn’t it just make you want to get outside and do something?! Well in my usual restless manner, I’ve been staring out at our backyard, then searching the web for ideas. Here’s what the backyard looks like now.

our blank canvas

And because I’m a very visual person I had to sketch it out for myself to see.

*Because I am as open as a book (no, not really) I will share these for your entertainment purposes*

My first rough (very rough) drawing of the yard. :(

I did this second using Paint on the PC, ummm….. you get the point, right?

I did this version using a free online gardening program. Unfortunately you can’t save what you’ve worked on, so I just took a picture of the computer screen. :)

Here’s a look of what we’re going for. Hey! Nothing wrong with having high hopes and big dreams right?!

Here’s some our ideas so far. Granted, all of these are definitely not going to get done this year.

  • enclose patio pad to make a sunroom
  • put up privacy fence
  • lay pine stray in strip of yard where cypress and magnolia trees are
  • plant ground cover
  • clear large level area where massive weeds/vegetation grows
  • have pavers, or stamped concrete installed in that area for foundation of a patio/outdoor kitchen
  • have steps build leading to patio area
  • spread mulch in bare areas
  • create a water feature next to the patio area
  • buy a grill
  • learn to grill something besides burnt hotdogs on the grill :) (but aren’t burnt hotdogs the best?!)
  • build/buy/have installed outdoor kitchen-grill area, countertops, bar area
  • build/buy/have installed a pergola
  • plant a couple of fruit trees

As we tackle each project I’ll be sure to post about it. And will eventually cross it off of our growing list.

As it gets nicer outside are there any plans that you plan to take on?

P.S. It’s killing me to watch the DIY Channel. I want to be on Yard Crashers. I keep strolling around in Home Depot and Lowes trying to practice my surprised face! :)

Roasted yellow squash

Posted on

Summertime brings all sorts of good treats. And last summer I discovered a new favorite. Yellow squash. My parents started a garden and grew squash among other things.  They usually cook it sautéed, but I wanted a different method that resulted in a less mushy texture.

And this is the perfect dish. It’s healthy, quick and easy. I’ve cooked this dish four times already (and we never have leftovers)! It’s delicious and we can’t get enough. I found the recipe here.

Roasted Yellow Squash

  • 2 small to medium yellow squash per person
  • 1/2 onion per person
  • salt and pepper
  1. Preheat oven 425
  2. Trim the ends of the squash. Slice each squash into lengthwise slices.
  3. Spray a baking sheet with oil.
  4. Lay the slices on the cooking sheet in a single layer.
  5. Slice onion into thin wedges. Sprinkle them over the squash.
  6. Bake for about 15 minutes, until bottoms of squash begin to brown.
  7. Sprinkle with pepper and salt, turn each slice over, and bake until bottoms of squash are browned, about 15 minutes more.

It’s so easy!

Sweetened by the caramelized onions and perfectly seasoned with just salt and pepper. Almost too tasty to be good for you. Hope you enjoy.

Night at the movies

Posted on

Last week I took Monkey to the movies. Now, I enjoy spending one-on-one time with our girls, but honestly their choice in flicks aren’t always the best. I mean the last movie I watched with her was Breaking Dawn (Twilight series) which by the way almost made my eyes bleed. I’m just sayin’.

Theatrical release poster

Anyways, this time was better. Much better. We saw Hunger Games, and I was fully prepared to roll my eyes thru much of the movie but, I like it! I may even go as far to say that I loved it! Yeah I know.

Now, I’m the kind of person that if I like something, I REALLY like it. Like I’ll eat the same meal over and over and I’ll play ”my song” on repeat for hours. For real. This movie was so good that if I wasn’t so cheap I would have paid to watch it again! But instead I’ll do the next best thing, (even though this is totally backwards) and read the book now!

So if you’re looking for something to check out and the theater, this one is a must! And I don’t say that often.

A toddler’s hiding place

We’ve missed a few weekends of our family photo challenge because………………I lost the kids’ memory cards! Wait, let me explain! The last time we had a challenge I had their cards and downloaded the pics. Then I put them in a very safe and remote spot (my nightstand) to give to them later.

Only, later never came because I totally forgot about it. Until, they asked the cards to take a few pictures. So I go to get them from the nightstand, and yep, you guessed it, they were gone.  I traced my steps and can still clearly see the two cards sitting on the table. So I then began looking…EVERYWHERE.  And it was only after frantically searching that I was led to the inevitable conclusion that the Little One had moved them!

So I asked her if she had moved them and she said “Yes”, then she went on to tell me numerous places that she had put them. Which led me on a wild goose chase led by my two-year old. And I think at one point I was tricked into having a tea party.

Fast forward to this weekend and we were preparing to go out to grab a bite to eat. I grabbed a pair of socks for Baby J, but decided I wanted another pair. So as I began to roll the socks back together I felt something in one of them. It felt like a quarter so I shook it out and 1….2 memory cards fell into my hand!

When I asked the Little One if she had put the cards in the socks she said “Yeah!” Like, of course where else would I put them? :)

Easter egg hunt

Posted on

When we were kids we had to actually HUNT for our eggs. But with the Little One our Easter egg hunt is more like an Easter egg “go get em’ as fast as you can” type thing.

The Little One got a 30 second head start, which her big sisters thought was unfair. She also got a couple special “Dora” eggs just for her.

Either way the kids had a good time.

Of course Turtle D and Monkey hit it big with most of the eggs with money and prices.

Luckily the Little One doesn’t care much about the cash. I’m sure that will change soon enough!

Hope you had a good Easter.
